Commissioned Lay Pastors

Chairs: Ken Ribe and Robert Bollar

Email: clpc@ptcaweb.org

A commissioned lay pastor (CLP) works in a focus area for a particular congregation for a specified time. The CLP can also serve on the PTCA Pulpit Supply list as a person who can fill a pulpit when a pastor is away.

The Presbytery’s Commissioned Lay Pastors Committee works with the Committee on Ministry and the Church Development Team to determine if CLP leadership is appropriate for a congregation’s ministry needs. Commissioned Lay Pastors help empower congregational renewal and can provide leadership for growing racial ethnic groups.

The General Assembly rewrote the guidelines for Certified Lay Preachers to create the CLPs position, which includes more than preaching: such as performing the sacraments, marriages, and moderating the session.  It may include working is a focused area within a particular congregation or verified ministry outside the church. The PC (U.S.A.) has online resources about CLPs and Why and When to use a CLP.

Is there a need for the Commissioned Lay Pastor?

Yes!  The Commissioned Lay Pastor Position Reflects the Mission of a Presbytery.  “When a presbytery, in consultation with the session or other responsible committee, determines that its strategy for minion in a local church requires it, and after additional instruction deemed necessary by the presbytery has been provided, a presbytery may authorize a commissioned lay pastor…” Book of Order G-14.0800

Commissioned Lay Pastors help empower congregational renewal, provide leadership and bring the Good News to ever changing and growing multi-cultural groups.

What is the role of the Commissioned Lay Pastor Committee?

  1. Assist local congregations and validated ministries to determine if CLP leadership is appropriate for ministry needs.
  2. Guide individuals through the process of becoming a CLP.
  3. Provide on-going support/evaluation to CLP’s as they serve their call.

Is there help for congregations and verified ministries discerning the appropriate need and use of a CLP?
